Pre-wedding shoot benefits are simple: you feel more relaxed, your wedding photos look more natural, and the “what do I do with my hands?!” moment basically disappears.

A pre-wedding shoot (also called an engagement shoot) isn’t about stiff posing or pretending you’re in a rom-com. It’s about spending a laid-back hour together, getting comfy with your photographer, and creating photos that feel like you – not like a performance.
QUICK ANSWER
A pre-wedding shoot is a short, relaxed photo session before your wedding. It helps you feel natural in front of the camera, builds trust with your photographer, and makes your wedding-day portraits quicker, calmer, and more you.
We’re Marta May Photography – also known as The Mays (Marta + Artur). We’re TWIA National Winners and now TWIA judges, and we’ve photographed weddings since 2012, so we’ve seen exactly what helps couples feel confident and look like themselves.

KEY FACTS
Time needed: Most pre-wedding shoots take 60–90 minutes (long enough to relax, quick enough to stay fun).
Best timing: Ideally 3–6 months before your wedding (or anytime that gives you the season/light you love).
Best vibe: Connection + movement (walking, chatting, laughing) – not a checklist of poses.
Perfect for: Camera-shy couples, busy timelines, and anyone who wants wedding photos that feel natural from minute one.
Pre-wedding shoot benefits: 7 reasons it’s worth doing
Before we dive in: this post is all about the benefits (the “why it’s worth it”). If you want the full “what is it / what to wear / where to go” guide, link this sentence to your Engagement Shoot: What Is It? post.
1) You stop feeling awkward (because the “first time” is gone)
Most people aren’t models – and you don’t need to be. A pre-wedding shoot removes that first-time nerves feeling, so on your wedding day you’re not thinking, “What do I do?” You’re just… being together. And that’s when photos start looking properly natural.

2) You learn how your photographers actually work
You’ll see how we guide you (gently), how we use light, and how we keep things calm and fun. So on the wedding day you trust the process, stay present, and don’t feel like you’re “performing” for the camera.
3) Your wedding portraits take less time (and feel more like you)
When you’ve already done a session together, you don’t need a long warm-up on the wedding day. That usually means less time away from your guests and more time living your day – while still getting those beautiful, frame-worthy portraits.

4) It’s secretly brilliant if one of you is camera-shy
If one of you hates being photographed, this is the cheat code. We keep you moving (walking, chatting, little prompts), so it feels like a date – not posing practice. By the end, most couples say, “Oh… that was actually fun.”
5) You get photos you can genuinely use (not just “nice pics”)
Pre-wedding shoot photos are perfect for save-the-dates, your wedding website, a guest book, table prints, or even just a few favourites on the wall. Plus, they capture this chapter – you two, before the wedding whirlwind hits.

6) You test-drive outfits and your “vibe”
You’ll learn what you love: cosy and natural, dressed-up and editorial, wild and windswept, or city-cool. It’s also a brilliant way to see what outfits feel good on camera (and what feels too fussy).
7) You get a time capsule of this exact season of your life
This is the bit people don’t expect. A pre-wedding shoot becomes a little record of who you were right now – the in-between moment before the day becomes history. And those photos only get more meaningful with time.

How we run a pre-wedding shoot (so it feels easy)
A pre-wedding shoot should feel like a mini date, not a photoshoot marathon. So we keep it simple, relaxed, and very you.
Step 1: We choose a location that fits you
Woods, hills, riverside, city streets, your wedding venue, or somewhere personal – we’ll help you pick a spot that matches your vibe and gives us gorgeous light. If the weather is being… British, we’ll also have a backup plan so you’re not stressing.

Step 2: We keep you moving (so it doesn’t feel like “posing”)
Most of the session is you two walking, chatting, laughing, hugging – the real stuff. We’ll give gentle prompts when needed, but we’re not here for stiff poses or awkward hands. Movement makes everything feel natural fast.

Step 3: You get a mix: real moments + a few cinematic “frame-worthy” portraits
This is DOCU-ART. We’ll capture the candid, emotional bits as they happen, and then when the light is perfect we’ll grab a few stronger, more cinematic portraits too – still natural, just with that little extra magic. We were so lucky to photograph this snowy pre-wedding shoot at Brinsop Court, how gorgeous is that?!?

Tiny prep tip: arrive with a bit of breathing space (even 10 minutes). If you feel relaxed when we start, the whole session flows beautifully.

Pre-wedding shoot FAQs (quick answers)
1. How long does a pre-wedding shoot take?
Most sessions take 60–90 minutes. That gives you time to relax, get variety, and still keep it fun (not like a full-day production).
2. When should we do our pre-wedding shoot?
A great window is 3–9 months before the wedding, or whenever you can get the season you love. Some couples do it in a different season to their wedding day so their gallery has more variety.
3. Can we bring our dog?
Yes – and we genuinely love it. We’ll plan the session so your dog can join for part of it (and we’ll keep prompts simple, so it doesn’t turn into chaos).
4. What if we feel awkward on camera?
That’s completely normal – most couples do at the start. We’ll keep you moving (walking, chatting, little prompts), so it feels like a mini date rather than “posing”.
5. Is a pre-wedding shoot really worth it?
If you want your wedding photos to feel more natural (and your couple portraits to be quicker and calmer), then yes. The confidence boost is real, because by the wedding day, you already know you don’t have to “perform”.
