If you’re wondering whether a register office wedding can still feel beautiful, personal and full of emotion, the short answer is… absolutely.

I’ll admit, when we arrived to photograph our first wedding here, we weren’t completely convinced. You enter through the car park, the building feels practical, and the waiting area reminded us a little of an NHS reception – information screens, notices and emergency signs. Not exactly the romantic setting you’d imagine for one of the biggest days of your life.

But then the ceremony doors opened.

Suddenly, everything changed.

The ceremony room is bright, elegant and beautifully designed, while the conservatory next door is even more impressive – flooded with natural light and full of space. Step outside afterwards and there’s plenty of room for confetti, relaxed family photos and even a lovely little meadow overlooking the historic former Royal National College for the Blind, perfect for a few romantic portraits before heading off to celebrate.

Having now photographed two weddings here – one an intimate one-hour celebration and the other a beautiful same-sex ceremony – we can honestly say this: don’t judge the new Hereford Register Office by your first impression. Behind those front doors is a venue that photographs far more beautifully than you might expect, and one that’s perfect for couples who want a relaxed, meaningful ceremony surrounded by the people they love.

The main ceremony room is warm, modern and beautifully proportioned. There’s plenty of space for family and friends, neutral décor that keeps the focus exactly where it should be, and lots of natural light, which always helps create timeless, flattering photographs.

Then there’s the conservatory.

If you’re lucky enough to have your ceremony here, you’re in for a real treat. Bright, airy and filled with daylight, it feels completely different from what you might expect from a register office. The glass, greenery and open feel create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, making it perfect for intimate ceremonies and natural wedding photography.

As documentary wedding photographers, we always look for venues that allow moments to unfold naturally, and these ceremony spaces do exactly that. There’s room to move, beautiful light throughout the ceremony, and plenty of opportunities to quietly capture all the smiles, laughter, happy tears and little glances between the people who matter most.
