Cotswolds Wedding Photography Guide: 24 Stunning Venues + 7 Insider Tips (The Mays)

The feel-good GUIDE to venues, light, and real moments

Cotswolds wedding photography is pure magic when it’s photographed like it felt – the laughter, the nerves, the chaos, the calm, and the little moments you didn’t even notice happening. We’re Marta May Photography – also known as The Mays (Marta + Artur) – a husband-and-wife duo based in Hereford, photographing weddings across the Cotswolds with our DOCU-ART approach (documentary heart + cinematic portraits).

We’re TWIA National Winners (as The Mays) and now TWIA judges, so you’re in very safe hands, but more importantly, you’ll feel relaxed, not “performed”. This page is your Cotswolds hub: venue inspiration, real wedding stories, and practical tips to help you get gorgeous photos without missing your own party.

QUICK ANSWER

If you want relaxed Cotswolds wedding photos, plan your portraits around soft light (late afternoon / early evening), choose one “no-stress” photo moment (10–15 minutes max), and let the rest of the day unfold naturally.

The Cotswolds is perfect for DOCU-ART wedding photography because the venues are character-rich (stone, gardens, barns) and the pace is usually laid-back. Below you’ll find our favourite Cotswolds venues, real weddings we’ve photographed there, and simple tips that make a big difference.

7 insider tips for better Cotswolds wedding photos

Here are the simple things that make the biggest difference – the kind of “insider” details you only really learn after photographing lots of weddings in Cotswolds stone venues, barns, gardens, and country houses.

1) Use the stone and the windows
Cotswolds stone + big windows = flattering, soft light, even when the weather is doing its usual British thing.

2) Do portraits in “micro-moments”
Two quick pockets (like 2 x 8 minutes) feels effortless – and it almost always looks better than one long, awkward session.

3) Pick one “anchor spot” at your venue
A doorway, a courtyard corner, a tree-lined path – one reliable spot means we can grab gorgeous photos fast, without wandering around or overthinking it.

4) Don’t fear the drizzle
Wet stone, umbrellas, candlelit rooms, reflections… rain can turn a venue into something properly cinematic.

5) Time confetti for light
If you can, aim for bright overcast or late sun – it’s the sweet spot where confetti looks full, soft, and glowy (instead of harsh and patchy).

6) Golden hour is lovely… but blue hour is magic
That short window after sunset, when the sky goes deep and venue lights warm up, is unreal in barns and manors – moody, romantic, and very “film still”.

7) Protect the party
If dancing matters to you, we plan photos so you don’t vanish for ages. The best moments happen when you’re actually with your people, living it.

FAQs: Cotswolds wedding photography (real answers, no fluff)

How much time do we need for portraits in the Cotswolds?
Most couples only need 10–20 minutes total. We usually split it into two quick pockets (for example 8 minutes now, 8 minutes later) so it feels effortless and you don’t miss your drinks, canapés, or your people.

What if it rains on the day?
Honestly? The Cotswolds is made for rain. Wet stone, soft overcast skies, umbrellas, cosy interiors and candlelight can look incredibly cinematic. We’ll adapt the plan, keep you warm, and still get gorgeous photos.

Can you help us choose the best photo spots at our venue?
Yes – we’ll guide you to the best light and the best backdrops on the day, and if you’d like, we can also help in advance with simple suggestions based on your venue and timeline.

Do you photograph Cotswolds weddings all year round?
We do. Spring and summer are bright and colourful, autumn is rich and golden, and winter is all about candlelight, atmosphere, and those cosy “everyone’s together” moments.

Do you offer wedding films and/or 35mm film?
Yes – we shoot wedding photography and films, and we can also add 35mm film for that extra bit of analogue magic (perfect for couples who love texture, grain, and a slightly nostalgic feel).

We hate posing – will this feel awkward?
Nope. Our whole DOCU-ART approach is built around keeping things natural. We don’t do stiff poses. We’ll give gentle direction if needed, but mostly we create a space where you can just be yourselves – the laughter and connection does the heavy lifting.

When will we get sneak peeks and the full gallery?
We share sneak peeks as soon as we can after the wedding, then your full gallery follows once it’s been carefully edited image-by-image (we don’t do quick AI dumps – your memories deserve proper attention).

How do we make sure we’re not away from guests for ages?
Easy: we plan portraits in short bursts, use one “anchor spot” near the action, and prioritise the moments that matter. The best photos happen when you’re actually living your day — not disappearing from it.
