Winter engagement shoots are wildly underrated. Yes, it’s colder. Yes, you might get a bit of wind. However… winter gives you something summer can’t: soft, low light, empty locations, and that cosy “just us” feeling that makes photos look properly timeless.

QUICK ANSWER
A winter engagement shoot is a short pre-wedding photo session during the colder months. It works brilliantly because winter light is soft and flattering, locations are quieter, and layers make you feel comfortable (which is the real secret to natural photos).
We’re Marta May Photography – also known as The Mays (Marta + Artur). We photograph pre-wedding sessions in our DOCU-ART style: real moments first, with a cinematic finish. We’re also TWIA National Winners and now TWIA Judges (2024–present) – and we genuinely love winter sessions because they feel relaxed, personal, and a little bit magical.

KEY FACTS
Best months: January to March
Time needed: 60–90 minutes
Best time of day: late morning to sunset (low winter sun = dream light)
Best style: layers, movement, real connection
Weather rule: we plan for it – and we use it
Why winter engagement shoots look so good
Winter light is lower and softer, which means it’s more flattering and more cinematic. Also, popular spots are quieter, so you don’t feel like you’re being watched. In other words: you can relax, be yourselves, and the photos instantly feel more natural.
And if it snows? That’s a bonus level. Even a tiny dusting can turn an ordinary location into something that looks like a movie still.

What to wear for a winter engagement shoot
The goal is simple: feel warm and move easily. If you’re comfortable, you’ll look relaxed – and that’s what makes the photos feel real.
A few easy wins:
- Bring one “upgrade” option if you want variety (for the last 10 minutes). Keep it simple.
- Choose layers (coat, knit, scarf). Layers add texture and make the photos look rich.
- Go for boots or shoes you can walk in (we move a lot, so comfort matters).
- Pick colours that suit the season: neutrals, earthy tones, deep greens, burgundy, navy, creams.
- Avoid big logos and anything you’ll constantly adjust.

How we plan winter sessions so they stay fun
We don’t do “stand there and smile” for an hour. We keep it moving so it feels like a mini date, not a performance.
We’ll usually do two short “settings”:
Setting one: somewhere sheltered or cosy (a lane, a courtyard, a forest edge, an old doorway, a pub exterior).
Setting two: an open spot for wide, cinematic frames (fields, hills, riverside, castle ruins, big skies).
Because we keep travel minimal, you don’t get cold and fed up. Instead, you stay warm, you stay playful, and the photos feel like you.
What if it rains (or the weather does its thing)?
Winter weather is normal. So we plan like grown-ups.
If it rains, we can:
- use sheltered spots (arches, doorways, trees, covered walkways),
- lean into the mood (rain often looks cinematic),
- or pick a cosy alternative (a quiet town street, a warm café vibe, a venue with character).
If it’s windy, we’ll use it for movement – coats, hair, laughs – and it often becomes part of the story. And what if it snows – just like during our winter shoot at Brinsop Court – well then it’s a bonus!

Winter engagement shoot location ideas
If you’re near Hereford, the Cotswolds, or the Welsh borders, you have endless options: woodland paths, rolling hills, rivers, historic streets, castles, and cosy venues. We’ve photographed winter sessions at places like Brinsop Court, and when the light hits (or the snow turns up), it’s honestly unreal.
If you tell us your vibe – wild and moody, cosy and romantic, editorial and stylish – we’ll suggest the best location and the best time of day.
Winter engagement shoot FAQs
Will we look stiff because it’s cold?
Not if you’re warm and moving. We keep you walking, chatting, laughing – it never feels like frozen posing practice.
Do we need snow for it to look “wintery”?
No. Winter light, textures, and layers already give that cosy feel. Snow is just a bonus.
How long should we book?
60–90 minutes is ideal. It gives time to relax and get variety, without dragging it out.
