We’re Marta May Photography – also known as The Mays (Marta + Artur), a husband-and-wife team based in Hereford. Elan Valley engagement photography is just different – in the best way. The lakes, waterfalls and rugged hills have that calm, cinematic feel you usually associate with Norway or Sweden… except it’s right here in Wales. It’s wild, peaceful, and honestly a little bit unreal.

But the real magic wasn’t only the landscape – it was their story. A few years earlier, Sam proposed to Jessica on that very bridge, completely out of the blue. Coming back to the same spot for their engagement shoot turned it into more than just pretty photos – it became a full-circle moment, and one they’ll always remember.

Why Elan Valley is perfect for engagement photos

Elan Valley gives you something most places can’t: scale. Even simple moments – walking, chatting, holding hands — instantly look more powerful when you’ve got big water, sweeping hills, and that dramatic Victorian engineering in the background.

Another reason it works so well is that it’s naturally a “moving” location. Instead of standing in one spot doing pose after pose, we can build the shoot around a gentle route: a few short walks, a couple of viewpoints, and plenty of in-between moments. That’s where the best photos happen – the laughs mid-sentence, the small glances, the “this is actually fun” realness.

And because Elan Valley is a destination people visit for the scenery, it suits couples who want their engagement photos to feel like a memory of a day out – not a performance.

The Elan Valley backdrops that photograph beautifully

One of the signature features of Elan Valley is its dams and reservoirs. If you like the look of stonework, sweeping lines, and epic water views, you’re in the right place. The dams on the River Elan include Craig Goch, Pen y Garreg, Garreg Ddu and Caban Coch, with Claerwen Dam being the larger, later build on the River Claerwen.

You don’t need to “do them all”. In fact, less is more. Two to three short stops is usually perfect: it keeps the energy relaxed, avoids too much driving, and gives you variety without feeling rushed.

Late afternoon is ideal because:

That said, Elan Valley also looks incredible in moody weather. Overcast skies can make the water and stonework look richer, while wind adds movement and energy (coats, hair, laughter – it all becomes part of the story).

Elan Valley shoots work best when you feel comfortable enough to forget the camera exists. So think: warmth + movement + outfits that feel like you.

A few easy wins:

• Layers (coat, knit, scarf) look great and keep you warm.
• Neutral, earthy tones and deep colours suit the landscape beautifully.
• Shoes you can actually walk in – because walking is the secret to natural photos.
• Avoid big logos and anything you’ll keep adjusting.

If you want variety, bring one “upgrade” option for the last 10 minutes. Keep it simple.
