Blackfriars Priory
Blackfriars Priory is a super cool historic spot right in the middle of Gloucester City. This place is really something special! While most Medieval monasteries got wiped out in the 15th century, Blackfriars Priory stuck around because it was the Mayor of Gloucester’s pad back then.
It’s got some amazing features, like the jaw-dropping 65ft scissor-braced ceiling in the North Range, showcasing original 13th-century oak beams that were a gift from King Henry III.
Plus, there’s the Medieval Scriptorium, thought to be the oldest purpose-built library in Northern Europe, which is pretty important globally. In the South West of England, it’s up there with the most significant historical sites, right alongside famous places like Stonehenge.
