San Galgano Abbey, Tuscany, Italy
San Galgano Abbey was built around 1280 and took about 60 years to finish. Monks lived there for ages until the roof caved in back in 1786. It’s located about 30 kilometers southwest of Siena. You can still check out the walls of the abbey, and it’s a great spot to soak in the vibe and amazing architecture.
Weddings at San Galgano Abbey are becoming super popular, and it’s easy to understand why. This huge abbey lets you tie the knot in a church setting while still being outside. You might also hear people call it Abbazia San Galgano. Just so you know, “Abbazia” is the Italian word for Abbey.

The wedding at San Galgano was a blast to shoot! People always ask me what my top wedding spot is, and to be real, I can’t pick just one. But San Galgano definitely stands out as one of the coolest. With its legendary sword in the stone, stunning views, and an open-air ceremony, it totally wowed me. Even the backup plan for rain, which had the ceremony indoors, was just as gorgeous!
The wedding we shot was super special thanks to the amazing people there. It was a close-knit group of friends and family with such a strong connection. We really enjoyed capturing those unforgettable moments for them. You could feel the happiness all around, with laughter and happy tears going hand in hand. Every photo we snapped captured the genuine love and friendship they share, showing just how beautifully they blend together. The warm Tuscan light gave everything a cozy vibe, making their celebration feel like a fairytale.
The day before… pre-wedding shoot
We totally took advantage of that golden hour to snap some amazing pics while the couple was still engaged. We roamed around the abbey’s gorgeous scenery, with rolling hills and a colorful sunset setting the ideal scene. The couple was all about the laughs and dancing, totally wrapped up in their love. What to remember when planning your San Galgano wedding ceremony?
You can tie the knot at the abbey, but there are a few rules to keep in mind:
No religious ceremonies allowed.
No symbolic weddings either.
You can go for a civil wedding, which is the only way to make it official at San Galgano.
The abbey is located near the town of Chiusdino. The town hall will handle the paperwork for your legal wedding, but you gotta get your documents ready ahead of time.
An officiant from the town hall will lead your ceremony in the main part of the abbey.
If it rains, no worries – you can move it to a side room that’s got a roof.

As the couple stepped out of the abbey, a shower of elegant white confetti erupted around them, transforming the moment into a fun celebration packed with happiness. Guests cheered while we snapped away, capturing those moments as laughter and love filled the air. The vibrant colors twinkled in the sunlight, giving it a vibe right out of a rom-com.

After that, we made our way back inside to hang out in the shade, enjoying the cooler breeze and dodging any squinting in the photos. We gathered everyone for some fun group shots, friends and family embracing and showing off smiles that said everything. With the stunning San Galgano Abbey in the background, we messed around with poses, capturing not just faces but the essence of their bonds. Laughter echoed as they exchanged old stories, blending joy and nostalgia just right.

There might be a few tourists around, but it’s usually just a handful. We can easily dodge them while we take photos. Most folks see you in your wedding dress and just step aside for the shots.
You can also visit the San Galgano Abbey and take photos in your wedding attire. You just need to grab an entrance ticket for about five euros per person. So if you’re looking for some extra photos, this is a fantastic opportunity!
